The Honda Civic has dominated the compact sedan field for a couple of years. Several brands have tried to stack up, but most of them fell short. Kia has shown great promise with the 2023 Forte, as both are capable vehicles built with the latest modern features. Let's find out how these two affordable sedans compare.
After both vehicles were redesigned in 2022, no changes were made in 2023. However, the GT technology package was removed for the Kia, while the Honda Civic Hatchback sees an introduction of the new Type R.
The Civic has a 7-inch touchscreen display with an option for a 9-inch display, which is available on higher trims. The Forte, on the other hand, has an 8-inch standard display and an available 10.25-inch display on high-end models. Both support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio and Bluetooth connectivity.
A blunt front end with pull-back pillars introduces the wild styling of the Civic. The front fascia of the Forte is covered by a full-width grille connecting the sharp headlights. Standard wheels are 15-inch and 16-inch versions on the Forte and the Civic, respectively, with options for 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloys available.
Both vehicles offer similar passenger and cargo space. However, the Forte has an edge regarding cargo capacity, as you can load an extra bag. When it comes to comfort, both are designed with premium materials. Additional features include wireless charging and heated seats.
Regarding capability, the Forte and the Civic are neck and neck. Despite offering slightly more power on the base models, the Civic’s 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 180 hp and 177 lb-ft loses to the GT’s 1.6-litre Turbo GDI, which provides 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Standard safety features -- including airbags, hill start assist, and stability control -- are available on both cars. Optional driver assistance technologies include blind spot detection system, lane keep assist and advanced forward collision assist, among many more.
